What's home energy efficiency and why should I care?

Learn what home energy efficiency means for your home, and how easy it is to make a difference to your pocket, and the planet.

Energy. We all use it, every day, often without giving it a second thought.

But in an era of rising energy costs and climate breakdown, it's essential to reconsider our energy habits.

Enter home energy efficiency – a way to help your pocket and the planet. Let's take a look at what it really means, and why the City of Wolverhampton have partnered with Kuppa to help residents to make their homes more energy efficient.

Home energy efficiency: a quick definition

Home energy efficiency is about optimising your home so that it uses less energy to perform the same tasks. This could be heating, lighting, or any other function, like using electricity for an oven. An energy efficient home will require less gas and electricity to provide the same comfort level as a less efficient home. Think of it like getting more miles per gallon from your car.

Why should you care about home energy efficiency?

1. You can save money

The most immediate benefit of a more energy efficient home is the potential for reduced energy bills. Less energy used means fewer units to pay for. Over time, this can translate into significant savings.

2. You can improve your living standards

Energy efficiency measures often result in a more comfortable living space – keeping your home consistently warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Rooms with inconsistent temperatures can suffer from condensation, as air moisture heats up and then cools. This can lead to damp and mould, which damages our health.

3. If you’re an owner-occupier, your home's value would spike

In the current property market, energy efficiency is becoming a prime factor for potential buyers. Homes with better energy ratings are likely to fetch a better price. Think of it as an investment for the future.

4.If you’re a landlord, it’s your legal duty

In the UK, since 1 April 2020, it has been illegal to let a property with an EPC rating below an E, unless you have a valid exemption in place. All existing privately rented properties will need an EPC rating of ‘C’ or above by as early as December 2025. Running your properties through Kuppa can help you understand what you need to do to increase the energy efficiency of any property you are concerned about.

5. We all need to be part of the green energy transition

Reduced household energy use leads to a decrease in our collective greenhouse gas emissions.  Greenhouse gas emissions have been directly linked to the dangerous heat waves we’ve seen all over Europe this Summer.
